About Client
The Port of Tyne is one of the UK’s most innovative and efficient deep-sea ports handling cargoes across five continents. The port comprises the commercial docks on and around the River Tyne in Tyne and Wear in the northeast of England.
About Project
Project Brief
Develop a solution for a smart port management that leverages 5G technologies, AI and other cutting edge features limiting to our own capabilities to enhance port operations, efficiency and decision-making.
Project Scope
The scope of this project is to build a MVP to showcase smart port solutions offered by the organisation to attract businesses
Objectives
01
The objective is to understand and identify the business potential areas
02
Propose right solutions using the latest technologies that the organisation have in hands to counter the smart port based problems.
03
Identify critical and potential persona and its usecases
04
The solution offered must reflect the values that the organisation will add to the clients
05
Unique and high quality deliverables to compete with global players

Short Timeline
Research
Exploratory - Secondary Research
Initial exploratory research was done from the online existing articles and research papers to understand the domain. The generic port operations, different problems faced by the port managements/authorities and the existing solutions available in the markets has been studied particularly to enhance our design approach.
Primary Research
The potential client’s port was studied superficially. Their existing Harbour/Port zones, processes and their available technologies and solutions to tackle the problems specific to their port. The detailed study on the client’s port usage, supply chain and the port operations has been carried out in the rapid manner.
Research Insights - Potential Business Areas
The research findings gave us the right direction to move ahead towards the solution. We figured out below are the key areas to focus for us to move ahead.
01
Bottlenecks
Recurring inefficiencies and operational bottlenecks
02
Cargo Operations
- Resource optimization and overall operational efficiency
- Cargo handling
03
Environment & Sustainability
Environmental monitoring and environmental impact of port activities, renewable energy production and storage
04
Supply Chain Management
- Needs efficient movements of the goods through and outside the port areas
- Last mile connectivity
- Inventory management
05
Asset Management
Effective handling, maintenance and optimisation of the port assets (digital and physical)
06
Traffic Monitoring
Land traffic monitoring and efficient movements of vehicles for effective cargo handling
07
Energy
Optimising port opertations through energy saving practices, real time monitoring and reduced consumption and costs. reduce environmental impact
08
Safety & Security
Surveillance and monitoring, Inspections, Hazardous/chemical materials management, cybersecurity, etc
Business Focus
Brainstorming
After brainstorming, the team decided to choose few of the potential areas identified from the mentioned above. The focus areas to look into for preparing the solutions to design are mentioned below.
Technologies to offers
Personas
Potential User Personas
During research phase, possible personas has been identified and the design is planned to build for one persona for the initial MVP phase.
Below are the few personas which are empathy mapped to find the critical pain points and expectations from the design solution.
CEO
Port Manager
Operations & Logistics
Manager
Sustainability Manager
Communication Manager
Cargo Manager
Vessel Manager
Assets Manager
Health & Safety Manager

Conclusion
The design was well received by clients and presented globally over 10+ international conferences and showcases.
This MVP fetched three multiple clients as of 2024.
One of such notable client was NEOM.
The upgraded version of the same design was required to seal the deal with NEOM.
